Access to materials and instruction are flexible and can be combined with each other as best suits student and school needs. The options outlined below include both students remaining in classrooms and students visiting the library.
Library Safety Guidelines
- All library staff and students will wear face masks
- Entry and exit doors, if available, will be marked and utilized, and doors will remain open when possible
- Upon entering the library, students/adults will get a squirt of hand sanitizer
- Signage promoting physical distancing and hand-washing will be prominently displayed
- Visual cues will be used to help students with physical distancing (places to line up, places to sit, etc.)
- Hand sanitizer and wipes will be present throughout library for use when browsing books and handling materials
- All library staff will practice frequent hand-washing
- Gloves will be worn by library staff when handling books
- Plexiglass may be installed at the circulation counter as needed
- Library staff will frequently clean heavily-touched surfaces (tables, countertops, door handles, computers, etc.)
- Library staff will arrange furniture and technology to maximize physical distancing and traffic flow
- Shared items (e.g., shelf markers, communal supplies, LEGOs, magazines) are discouraged
- Students are encouraged to bring their own devices and supplies to the library when possible
Book Check-in Procedures
Books will be returned to designated book bins/boxes/carts for a 3-day (72-hour) quarantine. At this time, books will remain on student accounts. After the quarantine, books will be checked in, cleaned with a disinfectant wipe, and re-shelved.
Book Checkout Procedures Option 1 (least restrictive)
In-Library Book Checkout
- Small groups, partial classes, or full classes (as determined by school schedule and library size) visit the library for book checkout allowing ample time to sanitize heavily-touched surfaces between classes
- Students and staff will be encouraged to browse digitally using Destiny (online catalog) to minimize book handling in the shelves
- Students are reminded to keep a safe distance from each other as they browse for books
- Students are reminded to only touch books they want to borrow
- Touchless or self-checkout will be encouraged where possible
- Students and staff will be encouraged to use Sora ebooks and audiobooks in addition to physical books (library staff will teach and reinforce this skill)
- Circulation duration and limit (number of books) per student to be determined by each library depending on space for quarantine, collection size, and access
Book Checkout Procedures Option 2 (most restrictive)
In-Class (Concierge) Book Checkout
- Library staff will curate and deliver a cart of grade-appropriate books for checkout in the classroom
- Students will be taught to use Destiny to place holds/reserve books (library staff will teach and reinforce these skills and accommodate younger students)
- The library staff will pull requested/reserved books from the shelves and deliver the books to students within a set time period
- Students will be taught to use Sora for ebooks and audiobooks (library staff will push into classrooms to teach and reinforce this skill)
- Circulation duration and limit (# of books) per student to be determined by each library depending on space for quarantine, collection size, and access
Library Instruction: The initial focus of the school year will be on skills needed to search for books in Destiny (library catalog) and Sora (ebooks and audiobooks), find research and homework help at Utah’s Online Library, and introduce new library protocols when checking out and returning books.

- Students will follow the physical distancing and safety protocols of their classroom
Open Access (before/after school, during lunch, etc.)
