Digital Elevation Parent FAQ

Students will use their district-issued email account to log into the Chromebook. Students will not be able to use a private Gmail account.

An Acceptable Use Policy is an important document which governs students’ use of the Internet at school and covers a wide range of issues surrounding the rights, responsibilities and privileges – as well as sanctions – connected with computer use. All parents and students are required to sign and agree upon its terms.

To provide more clarification for school district devices that are taken home, parents and students must also sign the Educational Device Checkout Agreement. (English/Español)

During the first few days of school, students will receive training on caring for and using their Chromebook with our Student Guide/AUP Overview presentation. Schools will decide when and how to deliver this information.

Your child is responsible for taking care of the Chromebook you have been issued by the Ogden School District. Students should not lend their Chromebook to anyone else and never share their password(s) with anyone beside a school official or their parent(s).

General Precautions

• Food or drink should not be consumed near your Chromebook when it is in use
• Use caution when connecting/disconnecting any cords, cables, or other removable hardware
• Avoid putting any pressure or weight on the Chromebook
• Students are encouraged to take their Chromebooks home each day, regardless of whether or not they are needed.
• Never leave the Chromebook unattended, unlocked, or unsupervised

Carrying Your Chromebook

• Never carry the Chromebook when the screen is open
• Chromebooks should always be carried/transported in a protective case, bag, or sleeve
• The Chromebook must be closed before placing it any cases, bags, or sleeves
• Be careful there are no obstructions when closing the screens (pens, power cables, etc.)
• Some carrying cases can hold other objects (such as folders and workbooks), but these must be kept to a minimum to avoid placing too much pressure and weight on the Chromebook screen

Screen Care

• Do not poke the screen
• Do not place anything on the keyboard before closing the lid (pens, pencils, power cables)
• When cleaning your screen use a soft, dry cloth. Avoid cleansers or water-based cleaners

Storing Your Chromebook

• Chromebooks should be powered OFF before storing to preserve battery life and internal hardware
• Never leave the Chromebook where it could be subject to extreme temperatures (i.e. car, in direct sunlight)
• Nothing should be placed on top of the Chromebook when stored in a school locker.

Chromebooks are intended for use at school each day, and students are responsible to bring their Chromebook to all classes. Chromebooks must be brought to school each day fully charged. A fully charged device will last at least 8-10 hours. Students should charge their Chromebook nightly and not rely on the ability to charge during the school day.

If a student does not bring his/her Chromebook to school, a student may visit the Library/Media Center and check out a daily-use device for the school day. A student borrowing a Chromebook will be responsible for any damage to or loss of the device. The use of daily-use devices by students is intended to be for the occasional situation where a Chromebook is forgotten. The frequency of student need of daily-use devices will be monitored. Students who obtain a daily-use device will be responsible for returning the borrowed device to the Library/Media Center by the end of the day when the device was checked out. Students who do not abide by this policy will be referred to administration and may lose daily-use device privileges.

Students are expected to charge their Chromebooks nightly at home and bring them to school fully charged. A fully charged Chromebook will last for 8-10 hours of normal use. There may or may not be an opportunity to charge their device during the school day.

Students will use Google Drive to save their work where students have unlimited space. Classroom teachers will instruct their class on how to submit their work via Canvas (secondary students) or Google Classroom (elementary students). There is limited local storage space on student Chromebooks.

Any technical issues or physical damage should be immediately reported to the teacher, principal, or library. Teachers and school personnel will support students in getting technical assistance through the technology department to have the issue resolved.

At the bottom right, select the time, then select Not Connected. Pick a network and connect. Connect to an open network and select the WiFi network. (Note: If you see your WiFi network name and a signal strength, your Chromebook is already connected to WiFi)

Although OSD Chromebooks will adhere to the same Internet filtering policies while in school, it is the responsibility of the parent/guardian to monitor their student’s Internet behaviors outside of school. Attempting to circumvent (to get around) the security and filtering features of the educational device may result in loss of privileges.

Option 1:

Ogden School District is creating Ogden SD LTE, a city-wide wireless network that will provide students with high-speed internet access to district-provided devices. For students who live in an area where Ogden SD LTE is not yet available, students may obtain a portable WiFi hotspot device. This device enables students to take home internet service—absolutely free. Both the device and monthly service fees are fully paid by the district. The program is intended to help Ogden School District students access online resources at home.

Option 2:

Ogden schools may have open lab or library times when students can complete school work and work on projects. Check with your school for more details. Also consider public WiFi access locations like one of the Weber County Library locations. You can also find free WiFi locations by searching for a free WiFi map online.

Option 3:

Local internet Service Providers offer discounted service plans that may meet your needs. Families have had success in the past with this option: https//www.internetessentials.com or call 855-846-8376 for more details.

Digital online file sharing between staff and students is one of the great advantages of the Chromebooks and is an easy and efficient way to distribute digital learning content. Printing of documents from the Chromebooks is available but students and teachers are encouraged to utilize the ease and efficiency provided by Canvas and Google Classroom to distribute and gather student assignments. Reducing the amount of paper used for printing improves the global environment, reduces operating costs at the school, and helps support the culture of digital learning.

If needed, printing is available via a hard-wired connection to a printer. Our schools will have USB printer cables available through the library for printing. To print at home, connect your USB printer cable and follow the on-screen notifications.

If the student anticipates not being able to connect to WiFi when they are away from school, the student simply needs to open any files located in their Google Drive while connected to WiFi to enable “offline access" which will then allow file access on the Chromebook without the need for a WiFi connection.

Ogden School District retains ownership rights for the Chromebook. OSD lends the Chromebooks to students for educational purposes. Administrative staff and faculty retain the right to collect and/or inspect Chromebooks and student accounts at any time.

Students are responsible for taking care of their Chromebook which includes but is not limited to:

• Keeping the Chromebook clean and free of stickers
• Preventing intentional marks or scratches
• Keeping the Chromebook away from water, other drinks, or food

If your child’s Chromebook gets lost, work with your child to immediately report this to your child’s teacher or principal. School leadership will support you and your child with replacement costs, our insurance program, and getting a replacement device. If the device is reported stolen we will also work with our School Resource Officers to file necessary reports and resolve the issue.

If damage occurs to your child’s Chromebook, either intentional or unintentional, please work with your child to immediately report this to your child’s teacher or principal. School leadership will support you and your child with repair costs, our insurance program, and getting a replacement device.

If your child needs a device for the school day (battery is dead or left at home), students may see their library/media center for a daily-use device. Daily-use devices are available during typical library/media center hours and must be returned by the end of the day. Daily-use devices are available on a first come, first serve basis. If your device is getting repaired there are also devices available for short-term check out.

All devices, including daily-use and short-term checkout, are tracked in inventory by asset tag, username, associated serial number, and condition.

In school, students should start with their teacher. If your child’s question needs additional support the teacher can help direct them to our OSD Technology Department or Digital Teaching and Learning Specialists.

Devices are managed at the school level. If your child is moving to another OSD school, please work with your child’s teacher or principal to check in the current device. If your child’s new school issues personal devices, they will be issued a new device at the new school.

If your child is leaving an OSD school for another district or charter, work with your child’s teacher or principal to check in the current device. If your child’s new charter school or district offers personal devices for students, they may be issued a device according to their procedures.

This handbook may not cover all possible events or situations that may occur during the school year; thus, if a situation arises that is not specifically covered in this handbook, the administration will act fairly and quickly to resolve the situation. In reaching a solution, the interest of the students, parents, school district, and community may be taken into consideration. All terms, conditions, and definitions in this handbook are subject to change at any time for any reason.
